An Introduction to the Body Wise Way: A workshop about self-advocacy and healthcare system harm reduction

What would it feel like to leave a doctor’s visit feeling heard by your provider and clear about the next steps for your care? The truth is, you are the most important member of your healthcare team. Yet like many of us, you may feel disempowered by, frustrated at, and disconnected from the system meant to support you in your health and healing.

The Body Wise Collective is here to gently guide you through an introduction to self advocacy and health system harm-reduction during which you will:

Learn how conventional doctors are trained to gather information so you can translate your lived experience.  Giving your healthcare team what they are looking for as quickly as possible allows you time to be heard in all you have to share.

Build on existing nervous system and self-care tools to support you before, during and after visits, both alone and within community.

Clarify your values so you can stay connected to what matters most, no matter what happens.

Couple's Massage (virtual)

Understanding some anatomy makes a huge difference in how you massage. In this class, I'll introduce you to palpable landmarks to support you to make contact with more specificity and confidence. I’ll share techniques and sequences to make things easy on your body and so smooth for the recipient. We'll focus on shoulders, neck, and back. Depending on time, we may also get to hands and feet, too. Make it a cute date, or grab a friend and settle in for some relaxing times. No special equipment or supplies needed.

$100 Register Here

"Julia's instructions are clear and easy to follow, and feel so, so good! I considered myself a decent non-professional massager already, but it turns out it is really helpful to have a sequence to follow that I know is safe and works well for my partner. We've tried it a few times outside of class and it felt like a really great mental health break as well as physical relaxation."

Embodiment & Awe: Anatomy for the Practitioner (virtual)

When the abstraction of what’s inside us takes on more of a distinct form, we can attune with more intimacy and availability to the truth of our body in the moment.

This day-long class is for practitioners interested in learning human anatomy through both visuals and touch. Connecting structures we can look at in a model or book with what we feel inside ourselves and when touching others alters what and how we know.

We will focus on the head, thorax, diaphragm, pelvis and feet, drawing from Somatic Experiencing and Craniosacral Therapy diaphragm frameworks and will be offered as an in-person workshop as well as one online. Our time will include visual anatomy, palpation of self, partnered activities, and group discussion.

From abstraction to form, we anchor.

Sliding scale cost - $250-450,

Register Here - $50 deposit towards cost upon registration

I've spent 28 years studying anatomy, first as an artist, then as a bodyworker and teacher of Anatomy and Physiology to massage students. Understanding the body has been a source of awe and ongoing wonder for me. My training includes Upledger Craniosacral Therapy, Barral’s Visceral and Neural Manipulation, Alignment Yoga, Myofascial Release, and Somatic Experiencing. I bring an intention of unweaving systemic oppression as I integrate these learnings into my practice. In my approach to the body, my time with Sage Hayes, readings of Susan Rafo and Staci Haines and workshops with Marika Heinrichs have impacted me most. I’m the founder and Co-Director of Threshold, a healing space in Philadelphia for queer, trans and non-binary folks. I’m a queer, white, able-bodied parent to an 8 year old, living a short distance from the Wissahickon woods. I have a cat who was born from his mother right into my hands, ten years ago.

"The virtual couples massage workshop has been a chance for me and my partner to slow down, learn something together which is one of our favorite ways to connect, and care for each other with a physical intention we don't always make time for. Julia's instructions are clear and easy to follow, and feel so, so good! I considered myself a decent non-professional massager already, but it turns out it is really helpful to have a sequence to follow that I know is safe and works well for my partner. Circular breathing is a sort of active meditation, It uses a conscious breath technique to cultivate self-awareness and the enhancement of physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual well-being.  One of the most basic benefits of this work is in building a closer relationship with your own breath. The circular breathing pattern relaxes your predictive mind and heightens your felt experience in the present, opening space for the integration of many kinds of held tensions. While this can be a deep experience, you are in charge of your breath throughout the process.

There will be time at the beginning for introductions and some words of intention. Then, we will go over the basic circular breathing pattern before setting up for a full hour of immersive breathing. At the end there will be time for sharing about the experience.

In interested, please reach out to Ambrose via website or email.
